Professional experience: Michele (Micki) Smith is Deputy Director (Acting) of the Crown Law Office, Civil of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. Following her call to the Ontario Bar in 1976, she practiced civil litigation with Hughes, Amys until 1980, when she joined the Crown Law Office, Civil to continue the practice of civil litigation. Ms. Smith has appeared regularly as counsel at all levels of the courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, a number of Administrative Tribunals and Commissions of Inquiry. Ms. Smith has appeared as lead counsel for Ontario in many noteworthy matters, such as the Commission of Inquiry into the Blood System in Canada (the Krever Commission); the Federal Court judicial review of the Krever Commission; the pan-Canadian Hepatitis C Class Actions; tribunal hearings under Canada's Internal Trade Agreement; and as intervener at the Supreme Court of Canada in the recent negligent investigation case of Hill v. Hamilton-Wentworth Police; the West Nile Litigation (Eliopoulos); and A.L. v Ontario (class action by children with special needs). Currently, among other briefs, she is counsel for certain parties before the "Iacobucci" Internal Inquiry.

Publications and presentations: Ms. Smith is a former Bar Admission Course Instructor, instructor at Osgoode Hall Law School's Intensive Trial Advocacy Course, and recently participated in an Advocates' Society advocacy demonstration for students and faculty at Kyiv Mohyla University Law School in Ukraine. She has presented papers for the Canadian Bar Association, the Association of Law Officers of the Crown, and has been a regular panelist and published articles for the Osgoode Hall Law School's Annual Crown Liability Conference. She participated on the Morden Sub-Committee of the Civil Rules Committee that re-wrote Ontario's Rules of Practice, and chaired Crown Law Office's Insurance Committee and its Malicious Prosecution Committee. She is currently a member of a Federal- Provincial- Territorial Working Group on Compensation of the Wrongfully Convicted, is working on a malicious prosecution project with the Uniform Law Reform Commission, and is on the Attorney General's Steering Committee on Civil Justice Reform. Micki Smith was one of the first female members of The Advocates' Society, joining in 1979, and has been an active member of The Society since that time.
