Robert Staley is a partner in the Toronto office of Bennett Jones LLP. Rob's practice focuses on complex commercial and securities litigation, including cross-border securities regulatory and enforcement matters, takeover bid litigation, shareholder disputes, class actions, appraisal and share valuation remedies, derivative actions, arrangements and the oppression remedy. He frequently speaks at CLE programs on these and other subjects. Rob's significant current representations include the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of Research In Motion Limited in connection with the company's voluntary review of stock options granting practices and ensuing civil proceedings and regulatory investigations. In addition, since early 2004 he has acted for Sun-Times Media Group Inc. (formerly Hollinger International Inc.) and its Special Committee in connection with a myriad of class actions, defamation actions, other civil proceedings, regulatory investigations and insolvency proceedings arising following the departure of the company's former management in late 2003.

Rob is co-chair of the Litigation Department of Bennett Jones and a member of the firm's Board. As co-chair of the Litigation Department Rob actively encourages the firm's high level of involvement in the activities of The Advocates' Society. Members of the Department are frequent participants as educators and students in the Society's educational and advocacy training programs. Rob participates extensively in pro bono activities. He has taken pro bono cases in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He is currently acting pro bono in a Charter case in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Rob is a strong supporter of and participant in The Advocates' Society and its activities and initiatives. He supports the Society's access to justice initiatives in relation to the Civil Justice Reform Project. He looks forward to opportunities to help the Society continue its leading role as an organization for advocates in Canada. He hopes to make a strong contribution and will devote significant time and effort to the Society, especially in the areas of education and advocacy training. As an experienced advocate he will work hard to further the goals of The Advocates' Society.
