 Public Speaking & Oral Advocacy

About the Program

Don’t miss this exciting new program featuring lawyer, author and professor of oral advocacy, Molly Bishop Shadel. Public speaking is a skill that every lawyer must master, including lawyers who will never set foot in a courtroom. Lawyers must be able to articulate ideas succinctly and persuasively in order to attract clients, communicate ideas in meetings with colleagues, train younger lawyers, impress supervisors – and, of course, win in court. But many lawyers spend their days communicating exclusively through writing or e-mail, and find themselves tongue-tied when suddenly confronted with a live audience. Public speaking can be an intimidating exercise, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little advance preparation (and a little rehearsal), anyone can become an effective public speaker.

In the morning, Professor Shadel will use lecture, video examples and interactive exercises to demonstrate what it takes to be an effective public speaker and provide a step by step approach for writing and delivering effective oral presentations. Topics include:

  • How to write an effective verbal presentation
  • Making listeners care about what you have to say
  • Gaining the trust of the audience
  • Gestures and body language
  • Using your voice effectively
  • Handling stage fright
  • How to bring a presentation to life

Participants who select full day registration will also participate in an afternoon advocacy skills building workshop with Professor Shadel. Please note that afternoon workshop enrolment is limited, and advance preparation is required. Participants will have a chance to make a short presentation for individual critique and coaching, and will also participate in group exercises to improve presentation skills.
